First ever iQFOiL European champions are crowned
After an incredibly exciting day at the iQFOiL European championships on lake Silvaplana, the first-ever European champions in the new class were crowned.
The medal race on this final day was a sudden death elimination with the top 12 of the women and men’s fleet battling it out on a mixed slalom/course racing format. Four sailors would be eliminated after each heat leaving only 4 to race for the top positions which also decided the event overall results.

Its ON for slalom racing
12:30 PM
The south wind has kicked in and the fleet is out on the water preparing for slalom sailing. The procedure is already underway for Yellow fleet heat nr. 1.
The wind is currently 9-11 knots with the occasional gust up to 15 knots.
Light, northerly winds remain on the limit. Sailors are standby
Winds between 3-8 knots still keep the fleet on hold. There is a chance of south winds later in the day. The next two days look great for lots of racing.
Day 3 starts with winds on the limit. AP is up and the crew is monitoring the conditions.
8:01 AM
The skippers meeting of day 3 has already taken place. There are winds of 3-8 knots with large wind holes in the run-up to the start line. The plan is still to attempt a start at 8.30 AM but with the wind deteriorating, the plan might change.
It’s yet another cold morning with northerly winds on the lake of Silvaplana.
Difficult winds force the iQFOiL fleet to stay on land for day 2
Day 2 of the iQFOiL European Championship was challenging for all sailors and race crew. Northerly winds filled one side of lake Silvaplana while other portions were left without anything. With wind shifts between 40-90 degrees added, it became impossible to hold any valid racing.
A few sailors make it out for some test runs in the gusty winds while most stayed on land.
The program for day 3 is an early skippers meeting (7.30) followed by an 8.30 first possible start. With two different winds forecasts showing winds at different times of the day, and from different directions, the race crew has called for an early start with racing at the first possible chance.
Gusty mountain winds keep the competition on hold
The winds are gusting over 15 knots currently but with massive wind shifts, it has been impossible to do any valid racing. It is also colder than usual with colder, northerly winds.
Sailors remain on hold
12:30 PM
With the wind shifting 40 degrees, it has been difficult to do any racing up until now. The sailors remain on hold for now.
Skippers meeting – Gusty winds force the fleet on hold
After a skippers meeting, the sailors are on hold as gusty and shifty winds fill the lake of Silvaplana. There is a chance of racing with the northerly winds and a chance of southerly winds in the afternoon, so the sailors will remain on hold until conditions are suitable.
Day 2 starts with light northerly winds
With a light, northerly wind between 6-10 knots, the stage is set for slalom action. The skippers meeting will be setting off at 10 AM with the first possible start at 11 AM.
136 sailors registered for the first-ever iQFOiL European championships
After a thrilling exhibition race followed by a Formula Foil European Championships, the first-ever iQFOiL European Championships has commenced with 136 sailors registered. 102 men and 34 women have signed in for this historic race which will crown the first European Champion in the history of the iQFOiL class.
The first day started with sunshine and windy conditions but was soon followed by bad weather which shut down the regular south streams on the lake of Silvaplana.
The next four days will offer a variety of conditions. With the fleet able to do both slalom and course racing, there are lots of options to get some racing in the bag.
